Roulette Tips Without The Hype

Roulette TipsIf you search online for roulette tips, you’ll find mostly rehashed and unhelpful information. For example, some sites give tips such as “bet on Red or Black for better odds” even though the overall odds and house advantage are no different between Red/Black and the Straight Up bets over the long term of play.

Worse yet, a lot of them have “click bait” style headlines such as “win a fortune” and “dramatically increase profits” when the information they provide does nothing of the sort. With that in mind, we will try and do a better job of it and give you some real tips that you may actually find useful.

Roulette Tip #1 – There Isn’t a Magic Tip That Will Increase Your Odds

That may be disappointing, but before you close the page and look for the magic bullet elsewhere, please read on. The house edge for European roulette is 2.7% and for American roulette it’s 5.26%. When people search online for tips, it’s usually because they want to find something that will increase their odds of winning which is why other websites have misleading titles about dramatically increasing profits.

The reality is that no such tips exist; the odds are the same no matter what. All you can do is read about the different strategies, (of which we have the most detailed information that you’re going to find) and then hope that luck is on your side. So the first tip we have is to stop wasting time looking for that elusive “tip” that’s going to tell you how to win all the time because it doesn’t exist.

Roulette Tip #2 – Play At Reputable Casinos (online only)

What is the point in risking your money if the casino is going to be awkward about paying you if you win? It is better to play at the large and established brands that will pay you within 24 hours with no questions asked, leaving you free to concentrate on playing the game rather than worrying about whether or not you will actually be paid.

BovadaBovada are the best online casino for USA players. They have multiple roulette games to choose from with $1 – $1,000 table limits and withdrawals are processed within 24 hours of request. Play at Bovada.

Roulette Tip #3 – French > European > American

There are many variants of roulette but the one that provides the best odds is French roulette. It has a single 0 like the European game but the 0 pays back half of losing Outside bets, resulting in the best odds you’re going to find.

An American roulette wheel has the 0 and 00 slot, hence why the house edge jumps up to 5.26%. You should only play the American version of the game when you have no other choice i.e: you’re in a real casino and it’s the only version of the game on offer. You will find French roulette in most online casinos so this is the version of the game you should play.

Roulette Tip #4 – Learn How To Play Before Risking Money

Roulette is a fairly simple game to learn but that doesn’t mean you should jump straight into real money games, especially if you intend on playing in a real casino. Instead, take the time to learn how to play, memorize the payouts and practice on free games while you get the hang of it – we have 10 free roulette games here.

Roulette Tip #5 – Avoid Get Rich Quick Systems/Software

There are quite literally hundreds of roulette systems and software programs (aimed mainly at online players) that promise easy and even guaranteed winnings. We’ve seen many claims such as:

  • From a former casino programmer
  • $9,400,000 earner by our users
  • Software that will make you rich
  • Exploits a flaw in the casino software

All these claims are nonsense and the software/system never comes close to matching the expectations set by the sales pitch. If you would like to know more about exactly why these kinds of systems don’t work, you can read about them in our roulette system reviews

Roulette Tip #6 – Know Your Strategy and Your Budget

Before you start playing, it is best to at least have an idea on how you’re going to play, what you’re going to bet on and how much you’re prepared to risk. It doesn’t have to be anything written about here or anywhere else for that matter; it can be entirely your own idea such as betting on numbers that mean something to you (anniversaries, birthdays etc). Having some kind of plan in your mind is better than just throwing chips randomly onto the table.

In terms of your budget, make sure you stick to it, especially if you’re using a progressive system such as the Martingale. Ideally, you will have a step in the progression where you will walk away and take the loss, a playing budget that you will stick to and walk away if you go bust, and a profit target where you will take the win and walk away.

Roulette TableRoulette Tip #7 – Overlapping Bets Don’t Increase Odds

Some players have a tendency to make overlapping bets in the hope of getting a bigger payout when their number hits, but this method of betting does not increase your odds. You can actually expect to lose more with this method of betting over the long term of play.

A classic example of this is a bet on a Street (3 number bet such as 1,2,3 or 4,5,6) and then betting on one of the numbers as an additional Straight Up bet. Here’s an example of why it doesn’t work:

If you bet Straight Up on number 1 with a £1 bet and spin the wheel 37 times, you can expect to lose £1 due to 36 losing spins and one winning spin only paying out at 35:1.

If you bet on the 1,2,3 Street and on number 1, each with a £1 bet, and spin the wheel 37 times, you can expect to lose £2 due to 36 losing spins for the Straight Up bet and 34 losing spins for the Street bet. This example also highlights a little roulette fact: the more chips you have on the table, the more you can expect to lose to the house over the long term, even if you win more short term.

Roulette Tip #8 – Avoid 5 Number Bet

Despite what other “tips” articles tell you, all the different bets have the same house edge and profit expectancy over the long term of play with the only exception being the 5 Number bet.

It’s a bet that’s only found in American roulette and it bets on 0 – 00 – 1 – 2 – 3 with one chip. The problem is that the house advantage for this bet is 7.89% compared to 5.26% for the rest of the bets. Remember though, you shouldn’t be playing American roulette in the first place unless there’s on other options available to you (see tip #3).

Conclusion and Apologies

Sorry if you came to this page looking for magic roulette tips that would flip the odds in your favour and help you win all the time, but as we explained at the top, they don’t exist. While it is possible to beat roulette with the use of cheating devices (read about them here), we don’t recommend them because they’re illegal in many jurisdictions around the world. As far as general roulette tips go, what we have above (and the rest of the site) is as good as it’s going to get.
