Roulette Rules

Roulette isn’t a game that has many “stone wall” rules; you basically just bet on something and then cross your fingers and hope that your bet selection was a good guess. Nonetheless, we shall try and cover all of the different rules on this page.

Rule 1: A European roulette wheel has 37 different slots. 18 are red, 18 are black and there’s one green slot, the 0. The house edge for this game is 2.56%.

Rule 2: An American roulette wheel has 38 different slots. 18 are red, 18 are black and there’s one green slot, the 0. The house edge for this game is 5.26%.

Rule 3: There are “table limits” applied to all roulette games, whether it’s online or offline. The table limits will clearly be specified to you both online or offline. All your bets must be within the table limits.

Rule 4: You can bet on as many of the different roulette bets as you want with whatever amount you want, providing of course that the amount you’re wanting to bet falls within the table limits (rule 3).

Rule 5: When you play in a land based casino, a roulette table has 6-8 seats available (may be exceptions at some casinos) and each player has different colour betting chips so the croupier knows who to pay.

Rule 6: When playing in a land based casino, the croupier will release the ball and when it has spun around the wheel about three times, he/she will say “no more bets” which obviously means you cannot place any more bets.

Rule 7: Each of the different bets has a set payout. You can read about these and find a full table at roulette payouts.

Rule 8: This isn’t a roulette rule per say but it’s certainly worth pointing out if your intentions are to play roulette online. All casinos give new players welcome bonuses and there are plenty of rules and conditions attached to them.

The two key ones are 1: you need to complete wagering requirements before you can cash out and 2: roulette doesn’t count towards them so for this reason you’re best off just avoiding bonuses. Read all about this at avoid casino bonuses.

Summary: That’s all of the basic rules for roulette covered. As pointed out above, you should take a look at our page on roulette bets as this will tell you every single bet that you can make. These could be classed as a rule. You should also check out our page on roulette payouts which tells you how much each different bet payouts out when they win. These again could be classed as a rule but they’re already covered elsewhere on the site.
